Tetzaveh

This week we read Tetzaveh, command. We read, again in great deal, the garments commanded to be worn by the Kohanim, the Priests. These garments resonate particularly with members of the Chevrah Kadisha, as the garments worn by the dead are called by the same names as these priestly garments.

Our custom here in Victoria has changed with a mitzvah. We bring in boxes of pieces of these garments from Winnipeg, and then several women in town sew these garments together. The 7 different garments are then gathered together, and stored to be utilized as needed, as community members are washed, dressed and placed in the aron for burial.

Coming up this month is not just Purim, but Zayin Adar, the day when Chevra Kadisha members have gathered together for centuries to honour the work they have undertaken throughout the year. It is a time of reflection and learning, a time to remember those we have touched in life and in death. Reading Tetzaveh reminds each of us of the sanctity of life, even in the garments with which we dress our beloved dead.

Wishing all long life, healthy life, a good life,

With deep love,
Rabbi Lynn
