Bereshit

As I write these words, I know my heart and all of our hearts are full of anticipation, hope and profound relief that the hostages will be returning home in hours. These last two years have brought unimaginable grief to their families, an entire nation, and Jews around the world.

May their return and the beginning of their healing begin, even as we open to the beginning of the beginning, a return to Bereshit, in our cycle of Torah readings. As God created the world with beauty and order, may we also see order restored to our beloved Israel.

Our Sages determined that God created more than one human as “It is not good for the human to be alone.” But our Sages determined that these humans also provided God with much needed companionship, with capacity to do God’s will on earth, with what will come to be known as mitzvot. Not only do we need each other in companionship, but we each entered into a desired and necessary relationship with God. May we all be so needed.

May these coming days be filled with joy, with work, with prayer and with song.

Much love,
Rabbi Lynn
